Constantine, known in Roman times as Cirta and later renamed "Constantine" in honour of emperor Constantine the Great, is Algeria’s third largest city and one of the most beautiful places in the country. A destination steeped in history and charm, it has forever been a crossroads of civilisations and cultures.
Constantine emerged in a stunning location, on top of a mountain surrounded by imposing gorges over 600m deep. It is known as “the city of bridges” as you need to cross one of the eight spectacular bridges over the river to reach it. Two of these are must-sees: El-Kantara, the oldest bridge, which today takes the form of a concrete arch, from where you can still see the partial remains of the earlier stone bridges, and Sidi M'Cid, which until 1922 was the highest bridge in the world, at 175m.
The ancient and complex history of Constantine is reflected today in its archaeological remains, in its houses and in the layout of the city, perfectly preserved. Its beauty is apparent to visitors in the colourful medina, the bustling bazaars and the age-old facades of the houses.
After wandering through the lively streets of the old town, we’d recommend a stop at the Ahmed Bey Palace, a precious example of Arab-Islamic art, built in 1826, and at the enormous Emir Abdelkader Mosque, highly elaborate and majestic.
Visit the National Museum of Cirta, which exhibits numerous artefacts dating back to Roman times and earlier, and don’t miss the bazaar in Constantine’s old town; through its long, winding streets full of normal, everyday life, you can try some Algerian street food specialities, such as djouzia, a traditional sweet made with honey and walnuts.
The local food is bound to win your heart, as will the irresistible charm of Constantine!
